Spread the love

A symbolic wedding ceremony is a relatively new concept, and there are numerous reasons why couples opt for them. While being “the one” can be viewed as a great honour, but it can also be viewed as a huge responsibility, a source of worry, and a source of many sleepless nights.

To avoid these complication; many couples enlist the help of a friend or family member to plan and celebrate their ceremony in a very intimate setting. In most common scenarios however; couples wish to get married and make it legal.

What is a symbolic marriage ?

In lay mans terms, a symbolic marriage is a ceremony in which in which a couple confirms their love for each other in front of their loved ones. It is termed as symbolic since it has no legal significance; in fact, the Christian religious rite forbids any wedding blessing if it occurs outside of the Church.

Symbolic Vs Civil Marriage

In terms of the civil rite, it must be performed in a registered council-approved location where the signatures of the spouses, one of the witnesses, and the officer of the Civil Committee can be recorded.

You can acquire a legally legitimate marriage before or after this ceremony if you marry in a church or registry office only (always in the presence of witnesses). Because the procedure is quick, you can have it the same day at the registrar office.

Are they any legal implications of the symbolic marriage on your assets ?

Since a symbolic marriage is not legally binding; none of the partners have legal rights that protect each other. However with that; it is a good idea to sit down with your partner well before the marriage to discuss these issues and conduct some financial preparation.

It’s hardly the most exciting premarital pastime, to be sure. However, whether you choose to merge your finances entirely or keep some things separate, the decisions you and your partner make regarding money will have long-term consequences for you—not just as individuals, but as a pair.
